Looking for Things to Do in Oceanside? Here Are 5 Fun Ideas for You
Oceanside, California, has more to offer than just beach-bumming. Here are five fun things to do in the area on and off the beach.
Most known for its beach and adventurous water sports, Oceanside just may be another great addition to your must-visit list. Oceanside is located north San Diego County, California, and is home to beach bums, surfers, and your average tourists. Here are some fun ideas if you're planning a trip to Oceanside.
1. Oceanside Pier
Take a break from the beach activities and cool your heels on Oceanside Pier. With a 1,942 feet stretch, the Oceanside Pier is one of the longest wooden piers in the west coast. It is definitely more than just a place to people-watch.
If you're in for a leisurely afternoon, take a stroll through the pier and have your lunch at the popular Ruby's Diner located at the end of the pier. You can also visit the Amphitheater which usually holds cultural performances and concerts.
The pier also offers great events like surf competitions, concerts, and fishing competitions. Plan your trip and research on which events are ongoing to have a better idea of what to expect.
Oceanside Pier is also a good place to bring your kids to watch the local wildlife like seagulls, dolphins, and pelicans.
2. Design your own surfboard
Oceanside is a surfer's haven. The place is famous for consistent waves and good surf conditions, after all. If you've had your fill of surfing, why not get your own custom surfboard made for a truly memorable souvenir?
Take your pick from various different surfboard manufacturers in "Shaper's Alley" and get your dream surfboard made. What better place to have one made than in a place known for surfboard design and manufacturing since the 1950s?
The place is also known for housing the best and most well-known surfboard shapers like Gary Linden, Michael Baron, and Donald Takayama.
3. Beer tours
One of the best things to do beachside is gulping down an ice-cold beer. With a budding beer scene, Oceanside is the perfect place to drink to your heart's content. Local entrepreneurs have taken the mantle on expanding Oceanside's beer industry. From tap rooms to craft beer to breweries, you can find any and all types of beer establishments in the area.
Try designing your own beer itinerary or check out ones already curated online. You can try the different beer establishments on shore like the local Breakwater Brewing Company or take a walk to Mission Avenue to try the Mission Ave Bar and Grill.
If you're looking for beer away from the ocean, then try the following most popular off-the-beaten-path beer places: Legacy Brewing Company, Tap That, and Oceanside Ale Works.
Also try the highly anticipated Bagby Beer Company. This establishment is owned by award-winning beer brewer Jeff Bagby.
4. Oceanside Museum of Art
Sick of beach-bumming and just want to take a nice Sunday off? Try the Oceanside Museum of Art, or OMA as it is called. The museum is located in downtown central and is in walking distance from the Oceanside Pier and Oceanside Transit Center.
The museum began its roots in 1995 and has since conducted a 15,000 square food expansion. That's three more levels of extra art space. OMA hosts several popular and acclaimed art exhibitions each year, which includes films, interactive art events, culinary shows, art classes, and lectures.
General admission to the museum is eight dollars, but OMA members are admitted for free. They offer student and senior citizen discounts as well. Try OMA if you're hankering to know more about Oceanside past its beautiful beaches.
5. Go biking
If you're looking for a more adventurous way to explore Oceanside, try exploring on two wheels. Biking in Oceanside can be a relaxing experience, or it can be a fun, active adventure. The trails around the area range from leisurely tracks to more high-intensity and endurance trails.
If you're not quite ready to sweat it out, one of the easier bike trails is the Bike to Mission San Luis Rey trail. This brings cyclists through a roundtrip from the pier all the way to Mission San Luis Rey. If you're taking this tour, make sure you're willing to set aside about a half day as Mission San Luis Rey also offers some good tours and eateries you can explore.
For more adventurous cyclists, take the Bike to Mission San Juan Capistrano for the perfect experience of beautiful scenic views while still getting in good exercise.
From beach activities and beer crawls to bike trails and more, Oceanside has a little of everything. Visit in the June to August period for minimal rain and optimal temperatures for a better all around experience.
