Coconut Grove Hotels: Incredible Stays in the Heart of Miami

Coconut Grove Hotels: Incredible Stays in the Heart of Miami

Miami's oldest neighborhood, Coconut Grove. Located right in the heart of Miami (clever title drop for the win), this is a place you DEFINITELY want to stay.

So you're heading to Miami, right? Whether you're going for business or pleasure or both, you're going to want to stay in Coconut Grove. It's relaxing, it's gorgeous, it's right in the center of the city. Some people love to just relax when they go on vacation, and for those of you who lean this way, The Grove is perfect for you. But even if you're the type of person who likes to go wild on your trips (I see you skydivers, I see you) you'll still appreciate being able to relax at the end of the day so you can be well rested and do it all again tomorrow. Whatever your style or reasons, Coconut Grove is truly where you can be in the heart of it all.

The following hotels are just a few that will make your stay comfy and memorable. And they're all walking distance from everything cool in Coconut Grove. Now I'm from NYC originally where we walk EVERYWHERE, but when I say walking distance I don't mean New Yorker walking distance, I'm talking "I don't like walking, but what the hell it's RIGHT THERE" walking distance.

1. The Mutiny Hotel

2951 South Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL 33133

YAAAAAAAAR MATEY! Oh wait, it's not a pirate themed hotel, my mistake. However, the view of the Biscayne Bay is spectacular, and there is a marina right there so boats abound (Now I get it!). The Mutiny Hotel is in a perfect location next to the water and within walking distance from everything you could possibly want to experience in Coconut Grove.

The rooms are all suites which are literally more like having your own apartment. The living, dining and sleeping areas are separate, there's a full kitchen with a bar, a washer and dryer, a big TV, you name it it's in there. In the morning they'll bring you their Rise and Shine Breakfast in bed, and they've got a delightful little Thai/American Fusion restaurant called Atchana's East/West Kitchen where you can get everything from Pad Thai to a Hamburger. You can check out the menu here:

If you want to stay in and cook there's a market just down the street. In fact, why are we going out and doing stuff again? Can't we just stay in the room and relax? Yeah you go out dancing I'm gonna sleep and watch TV... And all this probably costs $300 to $400 a night right? NOPE less than $200.

2. The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove

3300 SW 27th Avenue, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL 33133

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to why don't you go where fashion sits, puttin' on the ritz! Seriously though, everyone knows the name Ritz-Carlton. The name alone inspires luxurious images in one's head. You're thinking about it right now aren't you? I know you are. This one really needs no hype at all because the Ritz-Carlton's reputation precedes it. You walk into the lobby, to the pool, to the outdoor dining area, to the rooms, and you'll be captivated by it all. Some of the rooms have balconies which in this area is fantastic.

Housekeeping will clean your room twice a day instead of just once, their shuttle is a LIMO, and they'll even give you complimentary sunscreen when you go to the pool, which is great if like me you always forget to put some on and burn easily. It's the little things in life... But that's just what The Ritz is alll about, Par Excellence. But don't take my word for it, click on the link to their website and just look at the photos. Enough said.

3. Sonesta Coconut Grove

2889 McFarlane Road, Miami, FL 33133

The theme of this list is location, location, location. Every hotel on the list is conveniently located to say the very least, but here's something most people don't consider. For an example of the perfect location, I must make reference to my parents' house. They live in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the middle of a nature preserve. They're in a quiet, secluded, peaceful area "in the middle of nowhere", but it is literally a 5 minute drive from their house to a large shopping center that has everything you could ever possibly need.

This level of quiet retreat that is simultaneously within minutes of EVERYTHING is exactly what you'll get at Sonesta. It's not in the middle of a bustling block, but it's still a few minutes walk to Coconut Grove, and to Barnacle State Park for that matter. Get the peace and quiet you need to enjoy your trip, and when you want to go have some fun you won't need to go far. Also, I know every hotel in Miami is going to have a pool, but you know what's even better than a pool? A pool on a balcony 8 floors up that overlooks the ocean and has a bar. Time to kick back.

4. Mayfair Hotel & Spa

3000 Florida Ave., Coconut Grove, Miami, FL 33133

Just as its name suggests, The Mayfair is not only a hotel within walking distance of The Grove, but it's also a soothing spa. Part of the concept of vacation is resting and rejuvenating yourself, and when the place you're staying has massages and Japanese style baths, well, you're in for quite a rejuvenating time. Side note: I'm not really a bath person myself, but if I do enjoy one it had better be in a Japanese style bath. They're just plain calming.

There are some very interesting activities to partake in very close to The Mayfair, like the Pan American mini museum (This airline has some pretty interesting history if I do say so myself, anyone ever seen Catch Me If You Can?) or Fat Tuesday, a frozen cocktail joint with one of the best names I've ever heard. But when it comes to The Mayfair, it's worth staying there for the Rooftop Lounge alone. WOW. Just wow. The pool is surrounded by one long giant sectional, plenty of individual couches and chairs, and tent covered cabanas that are just brilliant. And the view? Well, go see for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

5. Residence Inn Miami Coconut Grove

2835 Tigertail Avenue, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL 33133

Ok, so maybe you don't care about rooftop lounges and upscale lobbies and all the glitzy stuff. Maybe you just want to visit Miami, be comfortable and enjoy your trip without spending too much. Everybody's different. Fortunately I have just the place for you. The Residence Inn looks like a condo and feels like a condo because it used to be a condo, and that gives it a real homey feel.

There's an outdoor BBQ area by the pool and the rooms all have large kitchens, but the real way they're going to save you money on your trip is these three words: Grocery. Delivery. Service. I've always said that internet shopping is the greatest invention of all time because you can get what you want without leaving your house. Well, why shouldn't you be able to do that on vacation or a business trip too? Between the delivery service and the nearby convenience store that's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this place can be like a home away from home when you travel.

6. Courtyard Miami Coconut Grove

2649 South Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL 33133

I would be remiss if I did not mention a place for all of you taking business trips to Miami. The Courtyard by Marriott is perfect for your business (no pun intended). The tallest of all the hotels mentioned on this list, it gives you the opportunity to have a great view in any direction not just the one side facing the water like many hotels. The meeting rooms they have set up have some of the best views of the water possible in all of Miami, perfect to impress clients and prospective business partners. It's also not just close to The Grove but right smack in the middle of it. Shopping and restaurants all around, plus The University of Miami and the Coconut Grove Convention Center are just a stone's throw away, so your meeting options are plentiful.

But if you're not on business don't let that dissuade you, it's still got the view and the location that you need for a pleasant stay, plus there's a bus stop right across the street if you want to go somewhere a little further away to have some fun. Also, and this may be a minor detail to some, but they use Paul Mitchell products in the rooms. As someone who uses Paul's Tea Tree Oil Shampoo myself, I can tell you that's MUCH better than your standard hotel soap and shampoo brands, if you care about that sort of thing.

Did I Mention The Location?

I cannot stress this enough, these hotels are exactly where you need them to be in Coconut Grove. No matter where you go, time is money. Actually, time is more valuable than money by far. That hour you spent trying to get from the airport to your hotel and then to your tourist or business destination in Los Angeles or New York City? Yeah you won't have to worry about that here. Whatever your trip is about and whatever your preference in hotels, rest assured that you won't have to go far to find one in Miami's oldest neighborhood. The heart of it all, exactly where you want to be.
