4 Must-Visit Casinos in and Around Miami
The Magic City is an intriguing destination for gamblers, both for local casinos and gambling cruises heading out to the Atlantic.
Miami, originally a Spanish mission in the Seminole-native inhabited Florida, was ceded to the USA along with the whole state in 1821. Miami grew slowly over the mid-19th century and was incorporated a town in 1896 with a population of a few hundred.
The city grew in prominence when Fidel Castro's leadership arrived to Cuba, and many rich entrepreneurs fled the island country. With this, the Magic City inherited Latin traditions and cultures, along with funds for investments and improvement from wealthy Cubans.
Miami's gambling roots come from the fact that the local authorities handled the prohibition quite vaguely back in the days, resulting a boom in criminal activity that included gambling. Even Al Capone had a branch in Miami, and the city was nicknamed Little Chicago.
Beside poker and blackjack, the Cuban bolita became extremely popular in Miami. The state legalized slot machines, bingo and horse racing over the course of the 20th century, crafting the road to the many prosperous Indian casinos that can be found today in Miami. While many citizens and organizations oppose gambling in Florida, the sheer tax revenue gathered is enough for an argument against the ban, and the casinos thrive on.
