Los Angeles Hostels: You CAN Have Comfort on a Budget

Staying in Los Angeles need not break the bank if you choose one of these comfortable hostels in the City of Angels.

Staying in Los Angeles can be expensive but if you are looking for budget options there are some great hostels available. Many are located in Hollywood but here we share our best finds in our favored Los Angeles neighborhoods including a Venice Beach hostel with an amazing location.

StayOn Beverly Hostel

StayOn Beverly Hostel is an excellent choice if you are looking for a convenient location and individual rooms. This is not a typical hostel as there are no dorm rooms and there is no kitchen, but if you are looking for an excellent place to stay with secure, comfortable and clean rooms then this is well worth considering.

The rooms are small, as you would expect, but are nicely furnished with wood floors. There are shared bathrooms which are newly refurbished. There is free internet access throughout the building. All rooms have a safe and are accessed by a key code on the door. This key code is emailed to you 3 or 4 days before you arrive.

One downside is that there is no kitchen but there are mini fridges in the room, access to a microwave and free Keurig Coffee.

There are only 5 parking spaces so this may be a problem if you are bringing a vehicle. However there is very easy access to public transportation with a bus stop close by.

StayOn Beverly Hostel is located at 4619 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90004.

USA Hostels Hollywood

This comfortable hostel has a convenient location just off Hollywood Boulevard and close to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and the Chinese and Kodiak Theatres.

The hostel is very modern and nicely furnished. It has a nice lounge and an outdoor patio which is perfect for socializing. The management organizes regular free barbecues, and comedy nights when local comedians put on a show to try out new material on the hostel guests.

There are also shuttles to the beach at Santa Monica, trips to Magic Mountain, Disneyland and Universal Studios as well as pub crawls and walking tours of Hollywood. This hostel really does go the extra mile to keep it's guests happy.

This award winning hostel has a lot to offer. There is a choice of different rooms with the dorm rooms being the best value. There are six and eight bed dorm rooms, each with it's own bathroom. The hostel also has two additional common bathrooms, one of which has a shower.

Every dorm bed has what is called a ‘privacy pod’. This features a shelf, reading light and power outlet as well as a screen to minimize the noise and light from fellow guests. It's a good concept and makes dorm room sleeping more comfortable.

If you want more privacy individual rooms are available. They are small but comfortable with either a twin bunk bed or a full double bed. These rooms are equipped with cable television, mp3 player, air conditioning, hair dryer and mini fridge.

There is a kitchen and you can create your own breakfast with pancakes, breads, oatmeal, fresh fruit and coffee every day. Of course you can also bring in your own food to make your own meals in the kitchen. More nice features are a laundry room and on site storage of luggage after you have checked out.

USA Hostels Hollywood is located at 1624 Schrader Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.

Orange Drive Hostel

This is another hostel with an excellent location close to the Hollywood Boulevard attractions and a short walk from a metro station. It is only about two minutes walk away from the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and the Chinese Theatre.

It describes itself as a 'boutique hostel' offering more than the average that guests have come to expect from hostel accommodation.

The shared dorm rooms each have two or three bunks and range in price from $40 to $46 per person per night. There are bathrooms next to each dorm room.

If you want more privacy then there are private rooms with either a double or two twin beds for $86 to $96 per room. These rooms have shared bathrooms.

If you want a private bathrooms there are some en-suite rooms available starting at $96 to $110 per night. There are also some En-Suite Group Rooms which accommodate 3 to 5 guests at $40 to $48 per person per night - this is a good option for groups or families sharing.

There is a fully equipped kitchen available for guests to use. Each morning they provide an all you can make yourself breakfast of waffles, pancakes, oatmeal and free coffee and tea. There is a common room with a flat screen television but there are no televisions in individual rooms. There is free wireless internet.

Another useful facility is a laundry facility on site with free detergent. There are free lockers but you do have to bring your own lock. The hostel will store luggage free of charge before check in and after check out.

Parking is available at $5 per night which is a steal for this area. There are also discounted shuttle services to the airport.

Orange Drive Hostel is located on 1764 North Orange Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90028.

Stay On Main Hotel and Hostel

This is a budget, no frills hostel with a choice of a number of different types of accommodation. The Stay On Main is located in downtown Los Angeles close to restaurants, shops and access to public transportation.

If you are looking for hostel type dorms they have a choice of shared bunk rooms either with or without private bathroom. There are also private rooms with a choice of twins, bunks and doubles with or without private bath.

There is a community kitchen with limited facilities including fridge, microwave and a toaster. There is a free continental breakfast available each morning with adequate, but limited choices. They also serve free afternoon snacks. There are plenty of restaurants and take out places nearby.

There is air conditioning in public areas but not in most of the rooms - this can be a problem in the heat of a Los Angeles summer so be aware of this.

A nice touch is the free wireless internet and complimentary use of iPads for guests. There is a games room and complimentary fitness center for guests to use which is open from 7am until 11pm.

Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel is located at 640 South Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014.

Samesun Venice Beach

This hostel has an absolutely perfect location right in the heart of Venice Beach. They claim, and they are probably right, that they have one of the best views from any hostel in North America. Many of the rooms have ocean views.

There are a variety of accommodations to choose from. There are dorm rooms with between four and eight beds in each room. The dorm rooms either have a shared or a private bathroom. There are personal lockers in each room and a reading lamp for each bunk bed.

There are also some double bedded private rooms which have televisions and mini fridges. The private rooms also have a choice of private or shared bathroom.

There is a shared kitchen and there is a free breakfast every morning with basic items such as pancakes eggs, fruit and coffee. They have a new laundry room and free wireless internet access.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The hostel organizes some great activities for guests including the Boardwalk Bar Crawl in a quest to find the best happy hours and bars in Venice Beach. Foodie Tuesdays take guests on a tour to find the best food trucks and local eats. Or if you want to go a little further afield check out the Hollywood Limo Party.

Like many hostels in Los Angeles the Samesun Venice Beach does not have air conditioning - so if you are visiting in summer be aware that you may be in for some high temperatures in your room. This hostel does say that it is checking into having air conditioning for 2016 but check before your stay if this is a big factor for you.

Banana Bungalow Hollywood

This is another hostel with an excellent location right in the heart of Hollywood close to all the famous attractions of Tinsel Town.

There are a range of rooms to choose from including traditional dorm style rooms and private rooms.

Budget Traveler Dorm Rooms are the cheapest option and have six or eight twin beds per room, lockers and a private bathroom with a shower. If you would prefer a private kitchen with your dorm then choose the Traveler Dorm Rooms for six or eight people. These rooms have a full kitchen and a television, lockers, air conditioning and a private bathroom.

If you are looking for a private room then there are a couple of options. Budget Private Rooms have air conditioning and a Queen size bed, a Queen plus one Twin bed or a Queen plus two Twin beds in a bunk. These rooms also have a television, small refrigerator, microwave, and private bathroom.

The most expensive rooms are the Premium Private Rooms which are air conditioned and have the same bed choices as the Budget options but also have a full kitchen, television, and a bathroom which has a bath tub as well as a shower.

There is a nice outside courtyard which is great for socializing and meeting fellow guests - you can even see the famous Hollywood sign from there! Another really nice feature is the Tiki Garden and Patio. There is an outdoor shower and barbecue area. There is a Billiard Room and even a Karaoke Stage.

There is a laundry room, free wireless internet and some free parking onsite.

Banana Bungalow Hollywood is located on 5920 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028
