Your Guide to the Best Restaurants in Sapporo, Japan

Sapporo, the capital of the Japanese island Hokkaido, is best known for its beer, skiing and yearly snow festival. The food is delicious - given the location of the island, there is an abundance of fresh seafood and fresh produce. And who hasn't heard of Hokkaido steak?

If you ever find yourself in Sapporo, check these places out for the best nosh in the city.

1. Soup Curry and Dining Suage+

If you ever find yourself in Sapporo, then this place should be the first restaurant you try. Suage is famous for its soup curry.

The customer is given a choice of curry – beef, chicken, lamb, etc., then an option of adding squid ink to the soup. The squid ink adds another level of depth to the flavor of the soup. Next, choose the spiciness level, and then extra toppings.

Soup Curry Suage is located at 7 Chome-1-1 Maruyama Nishimachi, Chūō-ku, Sapporo 064-0944. Hours: 11:30-22:30, Mondays to Saturdays. 11:30-22:00, Sundays and Holidays.

2. Rāmen Kyōwakoku

The Sapporo Ramen is considered to be one of the best types of ramen in Japan, which is why there are ramen restaurants scattered around Sapporo. Usually served with soy sauce, miso and and salt flavors, the Sapporo version includes fried vegetable toppings.

Ramen Kyōwakoku, or Ramen Republic, is a collection of eight ramen houses in one complex. If you’re hungry enough, maybe you could try a couple of bowls. Or bring friends to help you out so you can try more varieties.

3. Aoi Sora Organic Café

Aoi Sora Organic Café is one of the few vegan cafés in Japan. Lunch plates cost a reasonable ¥1000. All their dishes do not use animal products. Try the millet “fish” sandwich or the millet “fish” plates, it’s one of their best sellers. The vegan quiche is pretty good too.

Best-selling desserts are muffins and vegan ice cream. As the vegetables are sourced locally, the menu changes regularly according to season and availability of the produce.

Aoi Sora Organic Café is located at Chuo Ward, Minami 1 Jonishi, 22-1-7, Sapporo 064-0801. Hours: 11:00-18:00. Closed on Thursdays.

4. Jingisukan Daruma Rokuyon

Jingisukan is a signature dish in Hokkaido, and no trip to Sapporo is complete without tasting this dish.

Jingisukan is simple enough – it is lamb meat that you cook yourself on a hot plate, with cabbage and onions. This dish is inexpensive too, it’s no wonder there’s always a line.

Perhaps one downside is it’s hard to avoid the sputtering fat and the strong smell of cooking meat getting on your clothing, but when you taste the tender and flavorful pieces of meat, it’ll be worth the wait and the mess. Plastic aprons are handed out to customers to protect their clothing. Best eaten with beer.

Jingisukan Daruma Rokuyon is located at Minami 6 Jōnishi Chūō-ku, Sapporo. Hours: 17:00-5:00.

5. Sky J

Located at the top of the JR Nikko Hotel, at Sky J, you will have your meal with a panoramic view of Sapporo City. This restaurant offers breakfast and fusion lunch buffets, and the food is a combination of western and Japanese and dishes in between.

Highly recommended is the lunch buffet, which is a steal at ¥2500, and for an additional ¥500, you can help yourself to red, wine, and mulled wine.

The menu changes according to season.

6. Fugetsu at Sapporo Station

Okonomiyaki is one of Japan’s most popular food. Widely regarded as a street food, okonomiyaki can be bought in many of the small street stalls found in Japan.

Okonomiyaki are Japanese pancakes with different toppings: meat, prawns, octopus, squid or a combination of several. No two okonomiyaki are the same. However, the okonomiyaki served by Fugetsu, which is located inside the city’s train station, is considered by many to be the best okonomiyaki in Sapporo. Different varieties are available.

7. Hyousetsu Crab Restaurant

Hyousetsu is considered to be one of the finest and oldest crab restaurants in Sapporo. This establishment is famous for its crab courses, where different kinds of crabs are prepared and served in different ways. A little pricey – the most expensive course set would set you back ¥17,000 – but it’s well worth it.

Some varieties of crab include the King Crab, the Hair Crab, and the Snow Crab. Depending on what course you order, these crab are made into salads, soups, noodles, dumpling dishes. The crab meat is broiled, pickled, fried or eaten raw. Notable crab dishes are the crab hot pot and the crab porridge. The crab dumplings and crab tempura are pretty good too.

8. Hanamaru Sushi

In the Land of Sushi, Sapporo is one of the best sushi destinations in Japan. Hanamaru, considered to serve the best sushi in Sapporo, serves it two ways.

First is the normal sushi restaurant, where you can order and enjoy many dishes made from the freshest Hokkaido fish.

Second is Kaiten-sushi, or better known as converyor belt sushi. Guests can choose whatever sushi they want, and then the waitress will base the bill on the number of color-coded plates after the meal.

It's fresh and good quality fish at surprisingly affordable prices. A meal with drinks will set you back about ¥5,000. Whichever way you decide to order, Hanamaru’s sushi comes highly recommended.

9. Milk Mura Sapporo

Ice cream bars are a concept that is uniquely Japanese – ice cream and liquor in one glass. Perhaps the best known of them all is Milk Mura.

Milk Mura only serves soft-serve milk vanilla ice cream, but has hundreds of different liqueurs to choose from. The process is simple – order all the different liqueurs you wish to have with your ice cream, pour them onto your ice cream, and eat.

There are 3 ways to have your alcoholic ice cream – either with liquors, crepe and toppings or with liquors and a bag of cookies, or, the non-alcoholic option, with hot coffee and biscuits.

Milk Mura Sapporo is located at 6F New Hokusei Building, 3 Chome 8-1, Minami 4 Jonishi, Chuo Ward, Sapporo. Hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays to Sundays, 13:00-midnight. Wednesdays 17:00-midnight. Closed on Mondays.

10. Gotsubo

Gotsubo is a closet-sized restaurant that serves fresh oysters and scallops. The oysters can be eaten raw or cooked, and the scallops are huge and boiled with sake and butter. The huge scallops are ¥170 each and oysters are about ¥105 each. No wonder the place is always full, but guests always have the option to stand outside and eat. Excellent place for late night cravings or drinking.

11. Risotteria Gaku

As the name implies, this restaurant serves nothing but risotto, risotto, risotto. There are about 80 kinds of different risottos on the menu – tomato-based and cream-based sauces, and their original meat sauce. The owner sources all ingredients locally in the island of Hokkaido. One bestseller is the Bacon and Vegetable Cream Risotto.

The Sapporo Beer Garden is quite appropriately located right across the Sapporo Beer Museum. For ¥6500, visitors can avail of the All-You-Can-Eat-and-Drink. It’s all-you-can-eat grilled meat (chicken, lamb, etc.) and seafood (crab, squid), and several varieties of sushi and also all-you-can-drink for the beers. There is an extensive beer selection.

13. Moliere

Hokkaido beef with white wasabi

Moliere is a Michelin three-star restaurant. They serve French-Japanese fusion dishes.

For lunch, they offer the Menu Hokkaido, an 8-course meal featuring stingray and Hokkaido steak, would set you back ¥7800, and the Menu Moliere, a 7-course meal with clams and a pork fillet, would cost you ¥5800.

For dinner, order the Menu Terroir, a 10-course meal at ¥15000, with jumbo shrimp, abalone and lamb. The Menu Hokkaido (¥12,400) differs at dinner as it serves crab instead with the Hokkaido steak. The Menu Gourmande is an 8-course meal with clams and duck, at ¥8000.

Pricey, but delicious. They definitely deserve every star.

14. Farm to Table Terra Restaurant

Farm to Table Terra Restaurant serves delicious, fresh, organic food at an affordable price from breakfast until dinner. The menu offers vegan and vegetarian options, which is a rarity in Japan. There is a separate menu for each meal.

The soups and salads are probably the best thing on the menu, because the vegetables are all so fresh and crisp. For seafood lovers, try the tomato sauce spaghetti with king crab and salmon. For dessert, the chocolate fondant served with whey syrup ice cream and fresh berries is a must-try.

The ingredients are sourced from Niseko Green Farm and other local farms.
