The Very Best Bars in Downtown Boston

A fantastic city filled with young people, a booming bar scene, and plenty of fun—read on for our Top Eight Fun Bars in downtown Boston.

1. Scholars

A bi-level bar, lounge, and dance club, Scholars is one of the most popular spot for young people in the city. Located between the State Street and Downtown crossing MBTA stops, Scholars offers plenty of various seating arrangements, a large selection of draft beers, and a fully stocked bar with a knowledgable bar staff. Show off your moves on their notorious dance floor where things get so crazy drinks aren’t even allowed. Upstairs you’ll find more of a nightclub vibe with tables and plush banquet seating. Bottle service is available, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Another note, if it’s a mild night in Boston, leave your jacket at home as their coat check can be quite pricey.

2. Howl At The Moon, Boston

The party is always on a Howl At The Moon, Boston. This vibrant bar, filled with loads of young people, often features dueling pianos and specialty drinks. You’ll always hear today’s best dance and party hits blasting through their speakers. Howl At The Moon is also known for their super table and bottle service. Reserving a spot here means VIP treatment for the entire night.

3. Highball Lounge

If you’re looking for fun at its finest, look no further than Highball Lounge. Located in the Nine Zero Hotel, Highball serves amazingly creative cocktails in a fantastic atmosphere. Grab one of the many boards games they offer, or have some fun with word play on their magnetic letter wall. The tunes are always bumping and the guys behind the bar really know how to get the party started. Insider tip: we recommend getting there before 10:00 to avoid the admittance line which often snakes around the corner.

4. West End Johnny’s

A place where you can socialize and listen to great music upstairs, or head downstairs for a good old fashion dance party? Yes, please. One of our favorite things about West End Johnnies? They have a strict capacity limit, which means you bumping elbows won’t be too much of an issue. Their bar staff is friendly and well versed on a vast number of cocktails.

5. Sissy K’s

Located in Boston’s famous Faneuil Hall, Sissy K’s is part dive bar, part college bar, part tourist bar. These all add up to make one heck of a party. DJs spin tunes upstairs to keep the dance party bumping, while live bands play downstairs for those who are more into the classics. Also, they offer really cheap drinks. I’m talking ridiculously cheap, like $1.00 drafts and countless specials on cocktails. Sissy K’s is a guaranteed good time.

6. The Whiskey Priest

Located in the heart of the now booming Fort Point neighborhood, Whiskey Priest has an amazing deck overlooking the Boston harbor. Here you’ll find a wide range of people; everyone from college students to Seaport business folk, to the rare breed who have ventured out of Southie. Aside from the spacious deck above the bar, the Whiskey Priest also has a good sized patio out front for plenty of great day drinking. Aside from the plethora of outdoor space Whiskey Priest has, they also offer live music and DJs as part of their gig as well. Hit up Whiskey Priest on Thursdays for DJs spinning hits, or make a visit on Friday or Saturday to see live bands playing from 9:00 pm until 2:00 am.

7. Lansdowne Pub

A combination bar and dance club, Lansdowne Pub is located just across the street from Fenway Park and is known for drawing huge crowds. While it can, at times, be difficult to get a drink due to the hordes of people seeking the same, the enormous dance floor and hidden back room make up for it all. While there are usually tons of people dancing the night away on Landsdowne’s dance floor, the area is spacious enough for minimal drink spillage. We call that a win. They also have plenty of nights with live music, and even offer opens-mic events from time to time.

8. Citizen’s Pub House

An industry favorite, you can be sure the party is always on at Citizen’s Pub House. Usually bumping until the wee hours of the morning, the bartenders’ music selection keeps the crowds dancing and mingling all night, and they often join in on the fun as well. Citizen’s Pub House boasts over 200 whiskey selections, many fine wines, tons of craft cocktails, and an impressive number of craft and micro brew beers as well.
