Date Night Ideas in Louisville, KY
Although it's not Venice, there are still a lot of activities you and your special someone can enjoy together in this Ohio River port town.
If you're in a romantic relationship, you're probably trying to decide what your next date should entail. Granted, it's hard to go wrong with the classic balloons and a box of chocolates, but why not do something that is more unique? Fortunately for you, there are several places and activities in the inland port town of Louisville, KY that lend themselves to that memorable romantic venture you're trying to create. And the best thing is that you don't have to limit yourself to Valentine's Day. Following are ideas you can turn into a monthly or quarterly tradition for repeated bliss.
Take a Dinner Cruise
Nothing says "romance" quite like gazing at your true love with a river as your backdrop. So, surprise him or her with a dinner cruise on the Spirit of Jefferson or Belle of Louisville, historically charming boats which offer dinner cruises several times a week, especially through the summer and warmer autumn months. However, they're also available year-round for rentals and offer special holiday cruises for Valentine's Day, Christmas, Independence Day, and others. This the perfect option for a higher echelon evening with that special someone.
Be sure to look at their website calendar before heading down to the wharf, because advance reservations are required for the meal cruises.
Visit Falls of the Ohio State Park
This park straddles the Kentucky-Indiana state line and marks a waterway that was used for travel and business for hundreds of years by Native Americans, traders, and pioneers. But, setting aside the history lesson, this location is home to a beautiful patch of land filled with trails where you can hike, enjoy an old-fashioned picnic, and explore the beautiful gardens.
If you want to head out on the water and have a boat, there's an easily accessible ramp for public use. In good weather, this is a perfect backdrop to talk and have fun together. But, if you want to enjoy nature while it's dreary, head inside the Interpretation Center, where you can peruse the 100+ exhibits and enjoy the Wildlife Observation Room, where you can watch colorful songbirds and other small wildlife.
Hike the Big 4 Bridges
The Big 4 Bridges is a walking/biking trail located in downtown Louisville at the Waterfront. This impressive piece of architecture is a mile-long from start to finish, and overlooks the Ohio River and the Waterfront, with an awe-inspiring view of the city. At night, the bridges light up, adding "brilliant" to the long list of adjectives that could be used to describe this park.
And for an added bonus, you can pay to choose the color scheme used on the bridge. Imagine taking a walk on this bridge, among your lover's favorite colors. Wouldn't that be the best way to end the perfect date night?
Make Glass Artwork Together
If you and your sweetie like trying your hands at new things, check out Glassworks together. Here, you can flame a one-of-a-kind keepsake and even personalize it if you want. With one-on-one instruction by the owner and namesake of the store, you will walk out with a boatload of pleasant memories and a bauble to match (keep in mind that advance reservation is required).
When you're done creating your souvenirs, grab a drink and pastry at Jill's Place, a coffee shop in-house, and peruse the gallery glass decorations, bowls, and nick-knacks. Then take a seat and watch the professionals at work molding liquid glass into beautiful items in the studio at Flame Run.
From one end of Glassworks to the other, you'll enjoy the unique aspects of making glass artwork.
Enjoy an Evening at Kentucky Center for Performing Arts
Dinner and a movie has been hailed as the classic date night idea. But movies pale in comparison to live theater. Enjoy a form of entertainment that has been around for thousands of years -- and has only improved with time. Before your eyes, you watch a story come to life with stellar acting, incredible props, and heartfelt music (and all this with a quality you can't achieve with a silver screen, even if the movie is in 3-D).
The Kentucky Center for Performing Arts is devoted to delivering high-caliber drama that you will never forget. They have a fantastic line-up of musicals, so you know when you walk through the doors that you're in for a fun night.
Or, if you're not a theater person, check out their line-up of music performances, comedy routines, dances, operas, and lectures. Basically, KCPA is your one-stop shop for a fantastic evening.
Enjoy Dinner at Proof on Main
What's a list of date night ideas without a restaurant or two? Proof on Main is a local favorite that prides itself in being the definition of unique. Their menu consists of a wide range of items from charred octopus and bison burger to the typical American favorites of ribeye, rainbow trout, and fried chicken (the most tender and succulent possible, flavored to perfection with a vast array of seasonings, of course).
Proof's artwork attributes to the aura of the building, from the 30' golden replica of Michelangelo's David right outside the front door to the statue of a satyr on the bar to the paintings and photography on the walls. And don't forget the penguins! Proof on Main is very famous for these bright red traveling decorations. One day you might see one in the elevator in the adjoining 21c Hotel, the next, one might be a dinner guest at your table... or staring at you from across the bar... or waiting to greet you in the bathroom. You can never be sure where they’ll turn up. In any case, it makes for an interesting evening, wondering where a penguin might show up.
Enjoy an afternoon at Huber Orchard, Winery & Vineyard
Huber Orchard is actually located in Indiana, but only 30 minutes away from downtown Louisville. Here, you have your pick of options. For starters, take a romantic walk with your sweetheart in the orchard -- even hand-pick fruits that are in season! Then you can have a light luncheon at the Starlight Café, followed by hand-dipped ice cream in the Ice Cream Factory & Cheese Shop (be sure to purchase some delicious cheeses to take home with you).
Or you can take a more expensive route and enjoy a Tasting for Two in the winery’s Tasting Loft. This experience begins with a tour of the wine-making facility, followed by a romantic tasting of some of Huber’s best wines. You can even choose the location: either the patio or the dining room. Along with the wines, you will also be served cheese and meat platters, and a delicious lunch for two. You even get to take home a 19 oz. wine glass as a souvenir! Please note that a reservation is required at least two weeks in advance with a $25 nonrefundable deposit.
Square dancing is an activity that is often overlooked on the date night idea list. However, this is a sorry oversight. Time out of mind, dancing has been enjoyed by people of all ages, and that hasn't changed. There are several local clubs that host events regularly. If you've never done anything like this before, don't worry, beginner lessons are often offered immediately before a dance begins. Although many of these clubs require memberships for their dances, some offer regularly-scheduled public dances. To see a list of local clubs, follow the link below.
Not only is square dancing a lot of fun (and a great form of exercise), but it will also give you pleasant memories of special times you shared with your loved one. Who knows? You may even pick up a new hobby!
There are so many different ways to enjoy a few hours with your special someone. Louisville is no exception -- and that's whether you prefer more outdoor experiences, classy events, or unique exploits. So experience the best Louisville has to offer with your lover by your side. You're sure to love every second of it.
