Tom Bergin’s Public House

Tom Bergin’s Public House has been a Los Angeles favorite since 1936. This historic pub holds the second oldest liquor license in the country. The original owner was Tom Bergin, a lawyer from Chicago. He came from a family of brewers and publicans, and decided he wanted to open his own public house in Los Angeles. Bing Crosby was a close friend and frequent patron of the pub.

To see some of the history of Tom Bergin's Public House all you need to do is look up towards the ceiling to see all of the shamrocks with famous names there. These are all of the famous people who have frequented this beloved Irish pub over the many years of it's history. These include Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, and John Wayne. The most distinguished shamrock belongs to President Ronald Regan who was awarded this honor in 1983 in a ceremony in the White House.

This may also be the pub where 'everybody knows your name' as it was an inspiration for the television series Cheers.

Tom Bergin's Public House is one of the most popular places in Los Angeles to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The traditional celebrations last almost 24 hours, with the pub usually opening at 6 am, and not closing until 2 am the next morning. What better way to start St. Patrick;s Day than with an Irish Breakfast? This hearty start to the day has two eggs, bacon or sausages, Irish beans, grilled tomato, and toasted sourdough for $14. You can also create your own breakfast from a selection of eggs, bacon, tomato, sausage, and beans.

You have to sample an Irish Coffee at Tom Bergin's Public House. Irish Coffee was invented in 1938 at Shannon Airport. These were the early days of flying, and passengers would reputedly be somewhat surprised by how cold the Irish weather could be. A chef at the airport named Joe Sheridan wanted to create something which would warm up these poor passengers! What better way to do this than to create a drink of coffee with some warming Irish Whiskey mixed in, and top it off with Irish creme? This was how Irish Coffee was created. The recipe was brought directly to Tom Bergin's from the airport. The rest, as they say, is history. That is why Tom Bergin's Public House is known as The House of Irish Coffee!
