San Francisco is an amazing place to visit, but accommodation can be very expensive. Hostel accommodation is something that you may not have thought of, but can be a great option for a budget traveler. Hostels are not what they used to be, and there are a number of high standard places to stay in excellent locations in San Francisco. San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Hostel

San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Hostel is run by Hosteling International, and is an excellent base to explore the city. The hostel is located in a National Park with amazing views over the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are very lucky you may even get a Bay view from your room. With rates starting at just $32 per person for a dorm bed, this is an amazing deal.

The location really could not be more ideal for exploring San Francisco. It is to the west of the very popular Fisherman's Wharf area, and you can easily walk there from the hostel. Local bus transportation is within easy reach so that you can explore further afield.

This ideally located hostel offers dorm room and private rooms. There are a number of different choices of dorm room with male only, female only, and co-ed options. The smallest dorm room has four beds, and the largest has twenty two beds.

There also have a few private rooms for two or three. If you are a family looking for a room, you may be able to reserve one of the smaller dorms and have it just for your party.

All of the bathrooms in the hostel are shared. There are no rooms with private bathrooms available. The hostel provides all linens and towels free of charge. There is also a coin-operated laundry.

There is a kitchen on site so that you can prepare your own meals. A continental breakfast is included in your room rate. An unusual feature for a hostel is that it also has its own cafe, where you can pick up snack food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A popular addition is that they also serve beer and wine. There are many places within walking distance if you want to eat out instead of staying at the hostel.

There is free wireless internet available for all guests. A very valuable perk is that guests are also offered free parking, subject to availability.

The hostel has a lot of activities to make sure that guests get even more out of their stay. Many of these activities are free including the Hills of San Francisco Walking Tour, North Beach Walking Tour, Movie Nights, and the Tri-Hostel Pub Crawl.

Hostelling International San Francisco City Center

Hostelling International San Francisco City Center is an excellent place to stay if you want to be in the very heart of the city. It is a traditional San Francisco city building which was built almost one hundred years ago. It is located in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, so within easy reach of all the city has to offer. Union Square is just a five minute walk away.

Most of the newly renovated dorms sleep four people, but some sleep up to five. A nice feature is that each of the dorm rooms has its own private bathroom. There are some private rooms which sleep two people and have a private bathroom. All linens and towels are provided free of charge to guests.

The continental breakfast is free. Everyone prepares their own in the large, well-equipped kitchen. Items such as bagels, bread, jelly, coffee, and tea are included. If you want to upgrade your breakfast experience you can add pancakes or eggs for just $1 extra.

A nice feature of the hostel is the Ivy's Place Bar which is open every evening from 6 pm until 11:30 pm. This a relatively large hostel, and Ivy's is a good place to socialize with the other guests.

There are lots of activities which the hostel organizes for people staying there, many of which are free. These include The Chinatown Walking Tour, The Movie Macabre, and The Great Tri-Hostel Pub Crawl. You will not be short of things to do whilst you stay in this very popular tourist area.

Wireless internet is provided free of charge. There is also a computer area where you can use the computers for a small charge.

Like most of San Francisco, this is not a great place if you are bringing a car, as they do not have their own parking facilities. This is a general problem in San Francisco, as parking can be very expensive. There is public parking available close to the hostel if you can't leave your car at home, but it is $22 per day.

Pacific Tradewinds Backpacker Hostel

Pacific Tradewinds Backpacker Hostel is located in the Financial District of San Francisco. It is very convenient for exploring the city, and is just a short walk from Chinatown. Most of the guests say that they enjoy the sense of community here. It is a smaller place than some of the other San Francisco hostels, so there is more of a chance to interact and meet other guests if you want to.

Dorm rooms are small, but comfortable. There is a large locker under each of the beds so that you can safely store your belongings. There is a shared bathroom for each floor. Linens and towels are provided for you. Prices for each person range between $35 and $45 per night. There are no private rooms available.

There is a kitchen where you can make your own meals. Unfortunately there isn't a free breakfast provided, but there are plenty of places to either eat out, or buy provisions, within easy reach.

There are some nice extra touches of items which are offered for guests to use free of charge. Things like earplugs, hairdryers, and even umbrellas.

There is no parking available at the hotel. There is plenty of public parking in the area but this is San Francisco and you do pay a premium. Parking charges usually start at around $22 per day in the city.

Green Tortoise Hostel

Green Tortoise Hostel has an excellent location in North Beach, and is within easy walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf. It is a great place to explore all the attractions of San Francisco.

The Green Tortoise is a large hostel with a large amount of organized activities and amenities. There aren't many hostels in the world which have their own sauna and a massage chair!

They offer dorms and private rooms. The dorms have bunk beds and sleep between four and eight people. They provide linens free of charge, but you have to rent towels for a $1 charge.

There are private rooms which sleep two people. There are also some triple rooms available. These do not have a private bathroom.

The thing which really sets the Green Tortoise apart from many other hostels is the amount of things that the room rate includes. There is a free breakfast every morning, which is eaten in the huge Grand Ballroom. The breakfast includes continental breakfast items such as bagels, bread, spreads, coffee, and tea. You can also make your own pancakes and eggs. Unusually for a hostel, they also provide a free dinner three times a week.

There are pool tables, free wireless internet, and even a sauna and some massage chairs.

In common with most of the San Francisco hostels, there is no parking available for guests. There is public parking, but that comes at a high price. If you can when you visit this city, leave your car at home!

Hostelling International San Francisco Downtown

Hostelling International San Francisco Downtown has a great location in Union Square. You really are in the center of everything, with very easy access to public transportation.

This hostel offers dorm and private room accommodation. The male- and female-only dorms sleep up to eight people, and the coed dorms accommodate from eight to sixteen people. Dorm bed rates range from $35 to $65 per person per night.

Private rooms are also available which sleep either one, two or three people. Prices start at $89 per room, rising to $175. Most private rooms share a bathroom, but there are some en suite rooms available.

There is a kitchen where guests can prepare their own meals. A continental breakfast is provided every morning free of charge.

The hostel has a great choice of planned activities for guests, many of which are free. These include Chinatown Walking Tour, San Francisco Movie Night, History of San Francisco Social Movements Downtown Walking Tour, and the Polk Street Pub Crawl.

As with most San Francisco hostels, they do not have their own parking available. There is plenty of public parking in the Union Square area, but it is expensive.
