It’s known for its beauty and charm, as well as for shopping, entertainment, and cuisine. Here is a collection of some of the top restaurants that San Marcos has to offer.

You can’t boast about being a top entertainment destination if you don’t have an amazing pizza company in town. San Marcos has that in the Pie Society. With unique “society” theme named pizzas (e.g. The Illuminati, The Holy Grail, and The Balance of Power), they take ordinary pizza ingredients and kick it up a notch. They even add their own unusual pie toppings like an egg cooked on top of the pizza or Texas goat cheese. Whatever the case may be, they use the freshest ingredients for pies packed full of flavor. Hidden in the back of the restaurant is a handcrafted cocktail bar as well. Great beer and great pizzas, what more could you ask for?

A little off the beaten path is an interesting little establishment called Spud Ranch. It’s an entire restaurant dedicated to baked potatoes. These aren’t your ordinary spuds though. Spud Ranch offers a wide variety of unique toppings that bring the potato to a whole new ball game. They have entrees like the Mac and Cheese Spud, Chicken Fried Steak Spud, and Chicken Parmesan Spud, just to name a few. Spud Ranch has become such a local favorite that they’ve now opened a new location in New Braunfels, Texas, as well. For the only micro-brewery pub in San Marcos that crafts its own beer on site, stop by The Root Cellar. And of course, with great beer, comes great food. They serve made-from-scratch American cuisine from morning to night. It’s not just your normal American standards either. They put their own style in every dish, such as a goat cheese seared pork chop over a maple bacon, caramelized onion, corn, kale, and sweet potato hash. For a fine cuisine and tasty craft beer experience like none other, stop by The Root Cellar in San Marcos.

Over the past decade, food trucks have become increasingly popular. San Marcos even has a designated area called The Hitch for these vendors to park and serve the community. The Big Kahuna is one of these trucks. They serve up authentic Hawaiian cuisine, and some of the best burgers around. Their food is cooked fresh to order and will not disappoint. From the fish tacos to the moco loco, if you want to try some amazing island cuisine in the heart of Texas, The Big Kahuna is the only place to go.

Another popular food truck found at The Hitch is the WANderlust. Much like the name suggests, they serve a wide variety of cuisine from multiple regions around the world. Asian, Italian, and even American dishes frequent the menu. They specialize in sandwiches, noodles, and salads. Their sandwiches are by far the most popular in the area. It’s truly amazing how such big flavor can come out of such a small space like a food truck. To find the WANderlust, head to downtown San Marcos; The Hitch is located in the center of the town square.

6) Rogelio’s Restaurant

If you are in the mood for great Mexican food, Rogelio’s Restaurant is a local favorite. They serve a great selection of food morning, noon, and night. You’ll find classic dishes like Chile Rellenos, Tamales, and Enchiladas. You might even find some new favorites like the Brocheta de Camaron (grilled shrimp with bacon, bell pepper, and onion). By far, the favorite though, are their breakfast tacos. They serve a wide variety with room to customize. And for those not so keen on Mexican food, they also serve American dishes as well.

For dessert there’s nowhere better than Rhea’s Ice Cream. All of their ice cream is made by hand in their store. They have some of the most original and unique flavors that you’ll ever see, like Big Red, Avocado Coconut, Earl Grey and Vanilla, and Pistachio Cranberry. Some of the flavors are seasonal and they rotate them out, but no matter what time of the year you go, there will be something great for you to try.
