The 8 Best Steakhouses in San Diego

The 8 Best Steakhouses in San Diego

Looking for the perfect steak? We've combed around San Diego and have come up with the best places in the city to find the tenderest, juiciest steaks.

Let’s face it: the perfect steak is not as easy as buying an great piece of meat and slapping it on the barbecue grill, even if you do have wicked grilling skills. After all, it’s next to impossible to get your hands on excellent, restaurant-quality beef, and unless you have top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art equipment that can produce heat like a dragon’s maw in your kitchen, you won’t be able to broil the meat like these places can.

The restaurants featured on this list range from classy dinner places to old school diners with red leather booths and everything in between. They all have one thing in common though: the perfect steak. (And we don’t mean well-done—that’s not steak, that’s cardboard!)

So ladies and gents, here they are in no particular order, the best steakhouses in San Diego.

Steaks take center stage and dominate the menu of this upscale steakhouse located in San Diego’s lively downtown. Serving the best-quality USDA Prime-certified Angus and Wagyu beef, steaks are broiled at 16000, and seasoned with only black pepper, kosher salt, butter and fresh parsley to bring out the fine flavor. And what’s a steak dinner without sides? Traditional side dishes get an innovative spin from Chef Didi Lopez at Fleming’s. The Wellington Steak Restaurant & Martini Lounge

Looking for an intimate, romantic dinner? Have your date at The Wellington Steak Restaurant and Martini Lounge. With a dimly-lit, cozy ambiance and live music two nights a week, no wonder it was voted one of the San Diego’s sexiest places. Friendly too—it’s the kind of place where the waiter remembers your name, how you like your steak, and what beverage you’ll pair with it.

Chef Karrie Hills uses organic meats and produce, some from the restaurant’s family garden. Greens are fresh, so don’t miss out on the salads. The classic Caesar Salad has a nice zesty tang in the vinaigrette, and the strawberry and arugula salad has aromatic fennel in the honey-rosemary dressing.

The steaks are of the highest quality, and you can satisfy your inner carnivore with your preferred cuts and sauces—au poivre, red wine sauce, or chimichurri.

Pair your meal with their delicious cocktails, such as the “Barbados Blackstrap” (rum, berries, pressed lime juice and a thyme reduction).

Don’t skip dessert—the Goat Cheese and Lemon cheesecake with mascarpone and crème fraiche is a definite YES.

TIP: Try the Cedar Plank Pork Chop, 14 ounces of lovely, marbled meat that comes with a side of tater tots cooked in duck fat.

Donovan's Steak & Chop House

With wall-to-ceiling windows, Donovan’s offers a meal with gorgeous views of the ocean. This restaurant lives up to its name as a steakhouse: all the beef they serve is USDA Prime cuts and aged at least 21 days. You can get everything steak here, “from a petit filet mignon to a 24-ounce rib-eye.” The asparagus salad makes a lovely companion for the steak, and so do the skillet-fried potatoes with onions and peppercorn gravy.

TIP: That peppercorn gravy is soooooo good! Actually, that gravy would go with everything you order. Well, maybe except for the desserts.

West Steak and Seafood Restaurant

Source: http://www.10best.com

West Steak and Seafood Restaurant is definitely a carnivore’s paradise. This steakhouse serves wet-aged prime cuts, including the legendary bone-in 16-ounce filet. The meat is perfectly cooked to whatever degree of rawness you prefer (please don’t ruin that gorgeous piece of meat and go for well-done!) with only a little butter and sea salt to bring out the flavor of the meat itself. Juicy and tender, one bite will definitely render you speechless for the rest of the meal, able to make only “mm” sounds of appreciation.

If you prefer meat other than beef, the Colorado lamb and New Zealand Cervena venison chops come highly recommended too. For fish, the pan-roasted wild Alaskan halibut is definitely our pick. Moist and flaky, it is served with a lovely parsnip and butternut squash risotto and a delectable garlic and roasted tomato tarte Tatin.

In this writer’s humble opinion, the side dishes are a reflection of a good steakhouse. After all, a steak dinner wouldn’t be complete without them. West Steak and Seafood’s truffle macaroni and cheese, creamed spinach, and German spätzle are delish! Best. Sides. Ever.

End your meal with the decadent White Chocolate Crème Brûlée, which is served with an almond tuile of fresh, tart berries.

Stake Chophouse & Bar Restaurant

Source: http://www.tripadvisor.com

This classy chop house is located in Coronado, and boasts the highest-quality meats and seafood. With the kitchen under Chef Tim Kolanko’s rule, your dinner will delight your senses with the most delicious offerings.

Start with the kale salad (with Brussels sprouts, feta cheese and smoked almond), and pair it with Chef Kolanko’s Morro Bay Sable Fish. The perfectly cooked fish rests on a bed of creamy, pureed sunchoke. Or if you prefer meat, the salad also goes very well and balances out the saltiness of the Brooklyn bacon steak.

But of course, the star of the show here is steak. The restaurant offers a wide range of options like Wagyu, rib-eye, and several varieties from around the globe and the country, such as the Snake River Farms skirt steak: juicy, tender and flavorful.

Even the side dishes are something to rave about. Crowd favorites include cumin-roasted carrots with orange zest, the chanterelle mushroom bread pudding, and the charred baby broccoli.

Still have room for dessert? Cap off your meal with the luscious Chocolate Almond Cake with Caramel Mousse.

Argyle Steakhouse Restaurant

Source: http://www.golfaviara.com

Admire the view of the golf course and the Batiquitos Lagoon while you dine and sip on creative craft cocktails on the patio, or from the dining area with the huge windows. Argyle serves great seafood dishes like the Dungeness crab and shrimp salad, or the seafood paella with jumbo shrimps, and as the name implies: steaks!

Boasting "a wide selection of California natural prime beef and American and Australian Wagyu," diners can choose from a wide array of sauces to go with the meat prepared to their preference. The most popular sauce choice is the Cognac and Green Peppercorn Sauce. Not that the meat doesn't hold its own very well in the flavor department, of course.

Try the chocolate cake for dessert. The Tahitian vanilla gelato it is served with makes for an exquisite combination.

Ask the sommelier for help on pairings from the extensive 12-page wine list. Lots of great vintage to try here.

TIP: The hotel offers a free shuttle service between the restaurant and the hotel. Take advantage of this, for you'll surely be in a food coma after your meal.
