Do you love authentic, traditional Japanese food? Do you like getting massive portions that can easily feed two people for less than $10 each? If so, you’re sure to enjoy a meal at Sapporo Ramen. Located in a strip mall right next to Orlando’s largest Asian food market, Sapporo Ramen definitely looks like a dive. But don’t be fooled by its outward appearance! This restaurant is very popular with Orlando locals, and it serves up some of the best Japanese food in the city.
The highlight of Sapporo Ramen is, of course, its ramen. Order the shio ramen for a traditional salty noodle soup with nothing but butter and corn added. If you prefer a little meat in your ramen, try the tonkatsu, which is served with a breaded pork cutlet on top. This is a noodle restaurant, so udon and soba dishes are also available. Try the shrimp tempura udon for a filling meal that still clocks in at only $9, or go with the cold zaru soba on a hot day. If you have a few bucks to spare, add an order of takoyaki to your meal. This is the only place in Orlando where you can try this traditional fried ball of octopus meat and dough.
Sapporo Ramen is located at 5080 West Colonial Drive (Highway 50) in Orlando.
Right next to the beautiful Lake Eola in downtown Orlando, you can find the Relax Grill, another great place to get a meal for under $10 a person. The food at Relax Grill is part American, part Mediterranean, but you can be sure that is all excellent. You will also be treated to huge portions at this restaurant, just like at Sapporo Ramen, so be sure to come hungry! If you’re looking for a place to eat for less with a group, particularly with a large family, be sure you visit Relax Grill. Kids can eat for just $6 each and choose from a good selection of kids’ menu items.
As for adults, feast on one of many sandwiches or choose an item from the Relax Things section of the menu to keep your bill at about $10 a person. Try the shrimp po boy sandwich with a side of fries, or opt for a delicious blackened chicken Caesar wrap with a Greek salad on the side. If you can swing it, go for the wings and fries basket, which is an enormous portion of food that you can enjoy for only $12 (or $13.50 if you’d like to add on a pitcher of beer). For the lighter eaters in the group, Relax Grill overs some tasty stir-fry dishes, as well as an excellent 7-layer dip.
Relax Grill is located at 211 Eola Parkway in Orlando.
Thai Purple Orchid
Check out Thai Purple Orchid for the most affordable (and tastiest) Thai food in the city. This restaurant is every bit a dive, just like Sapporo Ramen, but once again it is well worth pushing past the exterior to get to the delicious food inside. Yes, it is in an old strip mall, but the great flavors and low prices are sure to make you forget that right away! This is a truly family-owned business, run by a mother and daughter who wanted to bring the flavors of their cuisine to the people of central Florida. After you enjoy your meal, be sure to peruse the authentic Thai groceries available next door, and pick up something to prepare for yourself back at home.
This is one of the cheapest places to eat vegetarian or vegan dishes in all of Orlando, so if you prefer to keep animal products out of your diet but still need to dine on a budget, be sure to check out Thai Purple Orchid. Try the vegetarian curry, made with tofu, bamboo, and bell peppers cooked in red curry sauce, or opt for the sweet and sour tofu with pineapples and peppers for a refreshing treat. For those who are looking for something with more meat, choose the yellow curry with a protein of your choice cooked with herbs, vegetables, and coconut milk, or the traditional and ever-popular pepper steak.
Thai Purple Orchid is located at 9318 East Colonial Drive (Highway 50) in Orlando.
